part 1
(Concept) Origami has persisted throughout history due to its disciplinary use of a singular material and technique. The iconic paper crane, for example, may appear simple, yet its complexities reside in the process of its creation. Upon closer examination, we can see that origami in its unfolded state consists of a combination of simple shapes. These shapes are divided by fold lines, also known as crease patterns, that further determine a recognizable form. As a result, a few folds could completely transform a piece of paper from a two-dimensional silhouette into a free-standing sculpture. Refold by Studio A12 is a study on crease patterns influenced by the paper crane. We seek to display a meaningful representation of origami history and culture by exploring its architectural potential and experimenting with new complex forms from fabricated materials.
(Form) Similar to origami, Refold adheres to the same principles beginning with crease patterns. As inspired by the paper crane, the form consists of four main segments. Each segment is a representation of the different stages of folded completion. The art of paper-folding was one of the most effective aids in the exploration of our form. Through countless iterations, we observed how unfolded surfaces not only produced crease patterns but also retained the capacity for structural potential or, in other words, a "folded memory." And when multiple unfolded pieces are attached, they produce a spiral-like form, admirable from all around.
part 2
(Pattern) An important cultural factor in Origami is its use of Japanese patterns on washi paper: Chiyogami.
Japanese patterns often symbolizes positive meanings of good fortune, beauty and longevity.
To mark the beginning of 2021 with hope for good health and growth, we have chosen to reflect the Asanoha pattern on Refold’s front motif. Using the form’s crease patterns as guidelines with the reference of the bird base, the Asanoha pattern has been warped to conform with the crease marks, thus further emphasizing the importance of each fold.
(Frame) Ascending seven feet in the air, Refold hangs within a minimalistic load-bearing structure. A total of ten fixated custom nodes secure the posture of the frame. Its skeletal form presents a simplistic and defining quality of crease patterns of the paper crane.
